While being a contestant in the first cycle of Topmodel, Baekelandt studied political science at the University of Ghent.[1] Fashion always had been her passion.
Baekelandt was named the winner of the first cycle of Topmodel after making it to the finals with Ine Nijs and Valerie Debeerst. Her prize was a €25,000 modeling contract with Dominic Models, a cover for Glam-it magazine, and an advertisement for L'Oréal.[1] She was also an often used model for the German C&A Collection of 2008.
